Hello!

We are just starting up a pilot data repository using DSpace. We were hoping
to be able to use standard DCMI terms as defined in the /terms/ namespace here:
(http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/), but it seems that DSpace's "dc"
schema is based on the properties in the earlier DC elements namespace and the
elements and encoding schemes that qualify them
(http://dublincore.org/documents/usageguide/qualifiers.shtml), along with some
DSpace-specific qualifiers that aren't defined in DCMI's schema. Is this
correct?

I saw that there is some current interest in bringing the DC metadata registry
into compliance with current DCMI standards,
(https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/cmtygp/Metadata+Support+Priorities), but
I'm wondering what we can do now to create metadata that's compatible with
well-defined metadata standards. We plan to expose our metadata as linked
data, so we're hoping to use existing standards as much as possible.

I have a few specific questions, but any related advice or discussion would be
much appreciated.

(1) Is there an XMLS or RDFS schema available for the DSpace dc schema?

(2) In the "Default Dublin Core Metadata Registry" section of the DSpace 1.8
documentation, quite a few of the fields are marked "Used by system. DO NOT
REMOVE". How are these fields used differently in the system than the fields
that don't have this designation? Is it related to indexing? Browse displays?

(3) Are there metadata practices we should be observing now in DSpace so that
our metadata will be easy to migrate when/if progress is made on the Metadata
Support Priorities
(https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/cmtygp/Metadata+Support+Priorities)? For
instance, it occurred to me is that it would be better to define a new schema
for any terms we find it necessary to add, rather than adding them to the
default dc schema in the metadata registry. I'm not sure if there are other
things like this that I'm overlooking.

Thank you!

Katie
