Did the re-export - review csv - re-import drill - the importer stated it
found no changes. The only thing left to try at the moment without hacking
the database directly (Thanks for the tip, Steve!) would be 1) export to csv
2) populate the unwanted fields with some mock data 3) re-import 4)

Thanks for the update - it will be interesting to hear how your re-import goes.
Since there are no spaces in the CSV (these would, I think, although I've not
had time to confirm it, be translated into empty strings once they get into the
database), I'm not sure what could cause this.
We removed some empty metadata fields today. Whilst not a recommended approach,
it's pretty easy. If you look at the logs, DSpace itself does the same thing.
Assuming metadata_field_id is 12345:

To answer the question on how to delete the field you don't want. Your best
bet is to use batch metadata editing. When you import a column
(dc.language.iso), with no value, then it treats that as delete that value
from the metadata record.
