[Dspace-tech] Changes to Jar files

We are trying to change the headers/footers of DSpace. We modified the .*.jar files in /opt/dspace-1.4.2-source/jsp/layout and then followed the procedure to rebuild DSpace. Everything went well except that the headers/footers are the same as they were before. Am I missing something?? Thanks
