Looks like I solved this problem. Seems like read_stdin() was doing
dot-stuffing (at input, of all places) and doing it incorrectly at that
(only single dot by itself was stuffed).
The attached patches move the stuffing to SMTP client code, and all dots in
the beginning of a line are ha
