D-STAR Hot Spot v2.27 is now available for download from the
files section of the gmsk_dv_node Yahoo group.
- Full duplex repeater mode using the node adapter!
If you are upgrading from a previous version, you will need to
uninstall the old version before installing the new one.
Updated
Icom ID-800H for sale. I used this unit twice to test it. But, never put it
in use. There is very little D-Star activity in my area. I have the original
box, manuals and everything it came with new. $450 plus shipping if outside
of the continental USA (Alaska and Hawaii).

So am I right in my understanding that a DStar 2m radio (such as
IC-V82 + UT-118) will send (or can be made to send) unadulterated
data over the voice+data channel?
Yes*.
The footnote being that you can't send any byte sequence. Since the
radios use XON/XOFF flow control, those values are
Sure, but don't forget that at ~900 bps throughput, 3116 numbers take a
REALLY long time to transmit. (30s)
With compression this would be 1588 codewords + 620 bytes of FEC, so really
only 20s ;-)
I'd definitely recommend trying to keep the packet sizes less than a few
D-STAR frames,
I don't find 2.27 in the files section

I have not yet gone to D-Star, but am thinking about it. My ARC had a
presentation on the system, so I am somewhat interested. We have a D-Star
repeater here locally.
I have a home in Tennessee, but there are no local D-Star repeaters. There is
one 30 or so miles away. I have reached other

Nate gave a long answer that addresses some of the variables, for a

If you can afford the difference between a 2200 + DSTAR board and an
ID-880H you will have a much better user interface plus 70cm.

Probably not the IC-V82 + UT-118. That rig has no serial port,
AFAIK. It's just a commercial HT with an add-on board. To do the
low-speed data you need one of the later rigs with a serial port on
it.
The V/U82s do have a serial port on them. It's down at the bottom of
the rig in the most
Oh yeah, you really dont have much control over when the radio transmits. You
really dont even know if it has transmitted anything. If the channel is busy,
the radios will tend to hold off transmitting, so you dont walk all over
everything. But if two radios are both trying to send while
Those responses pretty much answered my question. Yes, I suppose that I
should have phrased the question in terms of working distance, rather than
distance itself. I think that I will be getting the D-Star hardware for my

I have made the dive into D-Star and it has been very interesting so far. I
don't have a D-Star repeater here locally that I can work ht rubber duck, but I
do have a few that can be hit with a mobile antenna if I need to do so with my

I had done a quick test last night just after dark
D-STAR Low Speed Data has so much promise, but Icom's serial port
implementation severely handicaps implementation.
From my limited (theoretical) experience I would have to agree. It looks like
the D-Star serial implementation is a complete mess with data intermixed with
control frames
