D-Star * DigitalHere is the process I use when linking to other Repeaters or
Reflectors through a local repeater. The repeater trustee sets the rules on
your particular repeater but void of a formal process for your repeater, the
process I outline below is pretty common. The process is different if you are
connecting with a DVAP or Dongle.

1. Make sure that your local Repeater is free from traffic and announce on
your local repeater, your call sign and that you are linking to (whatever
repeater or reflector).

2. Link up and then listen for a full minute to make sure that you do not step
on an ongoing conversation on the repeater you have linked to. There is
sometimes a short delay after linking before the actual packets are passed
through for some reason, not always but on occasion this happens. That is why
you wait before you call out to make sure someone is not already talking.

3. Make your call and contact and hold your QSO.

4. Once you are through with your QSO, announce your callsign and that you are
unlinking the repeaters and then unlink. Would not hurt to give a quick
"thanks for the use of the repeater" before unlinking.

Now some will argue that you don't have to do all this but that's my two cents
and what I think is the courteous way. There are other variations that work
just as well.

So after reading the linking thread I would like to ask what is the most
proper way to cq on a remote system?

Link to the system and announce your linking.
Wait to hear if any qso is going on.
Then put out a standard dstar call with your call and star location

  Wait

  Have qso and then unlink

  Is this correct in theory?

Announce before linking on the local system what you are going to do, then
wait for about 3 minutes I would say, if a QSO is in progress, some systems
can take time to actually relay remote traffic and some don't until another
new user keys up there first.

Yes, that 3 minute wait is important. Seems that dplus doesn't pass
traffic if a transmission is in progress when the link is established
(I have confirmed this when using my hotspot). Because of this, you
have to wait that 3 minutes to be sure the link is clear.

  2a. ARRL Field Day Rules

I would like to know if anyone can tell me how I can find the 2010 Field Day
rules. I would like to know if they will allow VHF simplex contacts in DV mode
like they do in the FM mode.

I like working FM simplex on VHF and have had a lot of great contacts on
simplex in the DV mode as well with a lot less power!

Can anyone please tell me if the ARRL will allow DV simplex contacts to be
made in the contest this year?

  Thank you,

  Bob, N3PUG
  Oxford, Ohio

Nothing that would prevent you from making and scoring points using DV
  Simplex.
