Here in Tucson, our repeaters are configured so that when linked to a
reflector, they will auto unlink after one hour without use except those that
are perma-linked.

I don't see any need for authentication/security protocols for D-star beyond
what's already in place. What ever in the world for? We've done just fine for
many years without it on analouge V/UHF repeaters, Echolink and etc. We don't
need it anymore than we would need it on HF DX.
