I am trying to make a data cable using a spare USB cable. I want to try
d-rats but don't want to buy an expensive cable.
Does anyone one know of a wiring diagram to take the USB cable, and cut off
one end and wire in the plug for the radio

You'd need something between the USB interface and the radio itself,
which means a USB-to-serial adapter. If you have one of those, you can
get the mini plug and a DB-9 from
: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Cable for ic91 a/d

Make the RS232-USB cable, then add a USB to serial adapter, and it
should work fine.
