Can someone help me with what the TX messages are used for? In the
CS-D800 software I see I can program up to six messages and there is
also an on/off toggle. What are they typically used for, are they sent
manually or with every ptt, etc.?

If you use a GPS receiver with your ID800 for position reporting or have a
GPS emulator program to mimic the function of a GPS receiver for use at
fixed locations, C1 contains the message string used for position

You forgot to note, they're pre-stored messages that go out on each
transmission and show on the SCREEN of the far-end receiving radio.
They give you a few so you can change the message easily without having to
reprogram it, so you can have multiple "default" messages.
