It does have the switch, but I just don't like having to worry about it not
working, so I usually just plug in an external one as well - just to make
sure...

I've got a Lacie 40x external CD and it's pretty annoying to boot from, but
if I use an external terminator, and make sure the drive is spun up with
the system CD already in it before starting up the powerbook(2400/180) then
holding down "c" seems to work - The method goes something like
Set up C
or you can make your own. nice thing about Zips. bob

For emergencies and for occasional maintenance with
DiskWarrior I boot from the Startup Zip Disk (OS 8.1)
supplied with my SCSI Iomega external Zip drive. Just use
the Cmd-Shift-Opt-Del sequence at startup.

on Versiontracker.com i found this little Finder-substitute called
Minisubstitute which is much smalled than the Finder but supposed to
replace it for emergency diskettes. you could be able to replace the
finder with Minisub and then add CD drivers etc. i've never tried
it, famous last words

I can't boot from my CD (Lacie) unless it is selected in the Startup Disk
control panel. Pressing "c" or CMD OPTION SHIFT DELETE doesn't work. The
workaround is to create a boot floppy that contains the disktools system
folder with the drivers for your CD drive.

perspective, the Finder never seems to corrupt.

For those trying to downgrade (although functionally I think it is an
upgrade) from 9.0.4 to 8.6, I would recommend that you also downgrade your
HD drive if it is Apple's driver. My favorite is Silverlining from LaCie,
but use your favorite.
Alternatively, disabling the option in the installer to
Tom,
how did you make out - found and installed 8.6 ?

It would be useful to give more info. E.g. the "when i try this" is
i did it once at home on a beige G3 tower, and i had to reformat the
hard drive. i was able to do a clean install, but then certain items
would retain memory of elements of OS 9 and ask for them, stuffit for
example. i had to start over completely.
