Thanks all for the advice. Dual USB Firewire sounded like a good idea. A
little searching yielded--
CoolDrives-3714 MP1394-2 USB 2.0 & 1394 Firewire 5 1/4 Enclosure (about
$120 + s&h)
http://www.cooldrives.com/info.html

This enclosure plus a ATA-40 to ATA-44 cable adapter allowed me to take an
old IDE drive left from my 2300 upgrade and make it into a USB / Firewire
drive. (Adapter was about $12 from a local PC parts shop.) Did have to
puzzle out the correct arrangement for the adapter, snip a pin, and
jury-rig the physical mounting. But, once together, it was plug & play
with either USB or Firewire ports on my iBook. (Felt I had to move on to
OS X for Java 2).

Smaller / lighter / cheaper enclosures are available. However, the specs
suggest this one can be used to package almost any 5 1/4" 3.5" 2.5" hard
drive, CD, DVD, whatever. It has removable front bezel. It has a pair of
RCA audio jacks in back.

Hope this proves helpful to others.
