Usually it's common practice to use English in international mailing lists.
No,
it's not any written standard but still it is how these things work.
(Someone
might call it netiquette). There are many other things that are not any
(written)
standard but you still have live with them.

If someone is writing other than English, she/he must at least provide
translation so
that other people. Note that message posted on list really goes to all users
subscribed
to list. No I don't mind that someone is writing in language unknown to me
(that is all
other than Finnish, Swedish (very badly) or English). But you shouldn't
discriminate
your audience on public list like this.

And if you're just helloing friend e-mail is for that. Would you like to
read on newspaper
about greetings or hellos to other people in between real news? That's why
papers usually
have separate location for those.
