      At the time that you received KDOW the transmitter was in night mode (147 
watts) compared to 5k during the day which makes your reception even more 
impressive. 


      A few years back while on Kaua`i (and using my Walkman) KFAX (sister 
station) was coming in strong as usual when I tuned into 1220. The frequency 
was absolutely silent so considering it was around 1 am on the west coast (when 
you can briefly do transmitter testing outside of licensed parameters I dialed 
up the transmitter and switched it to day mode and there was KDOW! I switched 
it back to low power and it was silent again. It was pretty cool. :)
