Another observation: in case of problem also shutdown does not work
sometimes, it simply doesn't do anything, even if try multiple times.
The only solution then: switch to text console, log in, give command
init 0 as root.

I encounter this problem on my desktop pc that has just been freshly
installed with Ubuntu 14.04 on a regular basis. No changes or tweaks to
Unity. The problem started right after install. I have two laptops
running Ubuntu with Unity not having this problem.

It is a LDAP authenticated machine, and I was missing some admin-rights for
