Yup, I judging by the date when I added this, trusty was still in beta.
Haven't seen that problem after release. My bad for not updating this
bug report :/

This is great news! I no longer use Ubuntu (switched to elementary),
but this was one of my major gripes. Now, if they could see to it to
add the ability to remove the launcher permanently, then I'd certainly
be tempted back. Offering such user control and choice is a GOOD thing!

I have the same problem as described initially (as the title of this bug
report) after a clean install of Ubuntu Server 14.10.
I used sudo -i t become the root and then ran the following command:
* apt-get install systemd-sysv
After rebooting and logging in, I did not have the message/problem
