As a troubleshooting step, I tried disabling the Upstart entry for
indicator-datetime-service so

The AccountsService package rolls the org.freedesktop.Accounts.User.xml
schema, which comes with a default, empty InputSources. Mir defaults to
“en”.
Maybe we should set this value to “en” so that there's a canonical way
of figuring out what InputSource to use. Additionally,
FWIW, I believe /etc/default/keyboard is populated by Ubiquity at some
point during installation, so it's probably more reliable and user-
specific than hard-coding 'us' in the XML file as well.

whatever is in /etc/default/keyboard if the user's input sources list is

So... after ~6.5 years; 267 posts; and several thousand lines of
unhappy, frustrated, and/or annoyed feedback, my man page is still lying
to me about -t actually doing something and the devs are now adding
"you can use someone else's software or write your own" to justify their
design decision.
