I am also happy to report that after installing Marco Trevisan's patch
on 05SEP2014 I am no longer experiencing this glitch. Usually I was
experiencing this glitch daily to every other day but have not since
patching it.

I have not used any PPA for Unity, and I got the same problem after
upgrading to 13.10. I did not have unity-lens-friends installed and I
just get a completely blank content are in the dash. I tried removing
(and reinstalling) all unity-lens-* packages but so far, no luck.
