gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false
then the cursor reappears.

Finally happened again, and can confirm for comment #4 that 'gsettings
get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active' returns true.

Happens to me too.
I can confirm that the statement given by Stephen above returns true for me.
Is there a workaround for this? Any more information I can provide
maybe?

active' from the command line returns 'true' this is almost certainly
the same bug as bug 1238410.
The default is 'true.'
