[Dx4win] Longstanding DX4WIN problem - any solution?

I use a laptop as my shack computer, using a USB-COM adaptor. If I take the laptop on the road and wish to open DX4WIN, I get an Exception Error because the serial port is not there. Is there any way, short of editing the prefs file before I leave, to avoid this error? Tnx, Barry W2UP
