To add a bit more, I noticed that DX4WIN reads SSB when the FT897 is set to
the digital modes. Just passing this on for info. No problem for me.

Just tried it and it appears to work fine. Reads band and mode OK from the
radio and setting the frequency appears to work. Clicking on a spot appears
to work OK.
I "copied" the FT847 in the radio database, then changed the baud rate and
renamed it to FT897.

Bet you are using an MFJ TNC.
Set the TNC HEADERLN command to ON.
For some reason the default command is off in the MFJ TNC.
