The subject was Re: so far "complete failure." The article is about ecommerce on wireless phones:
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,56511,00.html?tw=wn_ascii I don't think things are so bad...The "complete failure" was predictable -- a real keyboard and a big color screen beats the human-to-phone interface by a long shot, so very few people use mobile phones for ecommerce of any sort, but plenty of people who ignore the alternative uses of mobile phones use a Speedpass. I LIKE my Speedpass. Unlike a phone, I don't have to use my fingers on it, all I have to do is wave it at something to get gas/food, and I never need to sign anything, or even pull out my wallet!! Like the big color screen & keyboard, Speedpass simplifies life, so people use it. Transponders to do what Speedpass does are getting cheaper, which is great -- BUT...Speedpass is totally tied in with the credit card and banking system to "pull" payments from credit card users. I wonder whether a "preloaded debit card" type of device along the lines of Speedpass, but "pushing" its payments to merchants (and possibly even using/leasing Speedpass receivers or communication facilities) would be practical?
