Okay, I do wish to refute one issue. My ancestors were all free settlers in the nineteen century. One branch came during the Australian gold rush having been in California. Presumably they found just enough gold to get to Australia, but I don't know. There is no written history. Other ancestors did leave reliable records, and this was the family of Christopher Sharam, the first settler in Penola, South Australia (left England around 1835 for a life on the south seas, and settled down around 1850). He would have been my great great great grandfather. The house (I mean *hut*) is now owned and maintained by the National Trust http://www.nationaltrustsa.org.au/properties/penola_petticoat_lane.htm . Now when the eldest son was a baby all of the local aborigines used to come and visit to see the little white child. They were in the house so much that the boy learned their language. How savage were those black fellas? This white fella thinks "not very!"
