Short of downloading some spyware to test on yourself, you have to trust the vendor and their claims and claims of users....
You probably want a 'shield' like solution rather that just a scan on demand solutions... The anti-virus applications are getting better at identifying key loggers as suspicious.. like Trojan.DiabKey is recognized by Mcafee for example. However many vendors don't set their level for stopping paristic/spyware software like gator. (want a headache, slow webbrowser? try www.gator.com :-P, and you might have got it accidently as part of some other trial or freeware like divx...) However to my knowledge their is no one good enough solution for shielding from viruses and trojans, you do need other programs for spyware, thus this email thread. Many users are doing "on-demand scans" for spyware using Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/ (spybot is now in english!) I have heard that some users are claiming that SpyBot is better than Ad-aware. I do have faith that theses two applications are good and well received by the Internet Community. Those of you who watch "The ScreenSavers" on cable or satellite tv might have seen them mentioned recently; http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/downloadoftheday/story/0,24330,3387119,00.html Unfortunately, to my knowledge, Ad-aware and SpyBot don't stay resident in memory and work like anti-virus shields, they are scanning software use on demand. For something to compare to spycop.com that will stay in memory and shield somewhat, a rival to spycop is Pest Patrol. It is a commercial package that claims to have as of version v3.1, MemCheck. an active memory scanner. "MemCheck ensures continuous monitoring of processes for active malicious code. If detected, the process is terminated and the malicious code is deleted." http://www.pestpatrol.com/ It works for most spyware, how it compares to spycop.. don't know :( Best is to know the pedigree of software you are installing and don't allow any software installed unless you consent... Easier said then done... Also don't use your win2K or winXP with full privledges, create a user with less priviledges and login as that user, etc... Personally, I could recommend an OpenBSD (not redhat!) box with KDE 3 for a desktop solution, except that setting up and using it with a M$oft world is not a walk in the park for the novice nor experienced. - g.luck. paul <ppruett at cocoavillagepublishing.com> //************************************************************* // Designing, Integrating and Maintaining Information Techology // Cocoa Village Publishing www.cocoavillagepublishing.com // 415 Brevard Ave, Cocoa FL 32922, ph 321-633-4990 fx 633-4997 //************************************************************* On Sun, 17 Nov 2002, Colonel Bosco wrote: > Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 06:48:56 +0000 > From: Colonel Bosco <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: e-gold Discussion <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: [e-gold-list] SpyCop > This stuff is supposed to detect keyloggers and hack-ware -- does anyone > have any experience with this software or are their claims just B.S.?? > Qualified opinions on whether it works please.. > http://www.spy-software-planet.com/spycop.htm > --- You are currently subscribed to e-gold-list as: archive@jab.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use e-gold's Secure Randomized Keyboard (SRK) when accessing your e-gold account(s) via the web and shopping cart interfaces to help thwart keystroke loggers and common viruses.
