FWIW, in e1000e the PHY is already powered down when the interface is brought
down if WoL and manageability are disabled. There is an issue where the PHY
remains powered on when the driver is removed for which I have a patch already
queued up here at Intel.

we get a kernel trace when we try to send jumbo frames over a 10GbE link using
linux kernel 2.6.31.5 and ixgbe-2.0.44.14 from sf. With 2.6.28.10 and
ixgbe-2.0.34.3 things worked well.
Kernel config has only minor changes, DCA was switched on but is not used.
