I have a dual 800 MHz Pentium III at home as well. I have 1 GB RAM and
have set IDEA to use a maximum of 384 MB. I can work quite well with
these settings. At work I have a single 1,6 GHz Pentium 4 with 512 MB
RAM and have tried to set IDEA to use a maximum of 192 MB. Whenever

Maybe your heap is too big. With a large heap, Java VMs typically fill it up before
considering garbage collection. The "thinking" you are associating with IDEA may be
Java throwing out the garbage.
If you have changed the heap size, try a smaller size. You could also consider
incremental
