I am relatively new to this list ... and thus far have sat quietly at my
computer watching the bickering on my screen. The responses to Al's
message were simply too much. Anger is a very real and very justifiable
response to the continued oppression of women. However, when this anger
breeds only resentment it is hardly constructive. Feminism is about
giving women choices, opportunity, and freedom. It is not about bashing
the men - especially the men who are trying to support our goals.
Welcome to the real world - there will be opposition and
misunderstanding. There will be those who are adamantly opposed to our
ideals and those who unconditionally support them.
Al brings up some very good points and should not be dismissed simply
because he doesn't offer himself as a sacrafice to the leaders of the
sometimes extreme feminist movement. It is time to stop sreaming about
oppression and injustice and use the anger to motivate us to work in this
real world and work with men and women to change this world with which we
are so angry.
