POSITION VACANCY

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR DEVELOPMENT

The Loro Parque Fundación is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation
legally registered with the Ministry of Education and Science of the
Government of Spain since 1994. Based at Loro Parque on Tenerife, in the
Canary Islands, it operates on an international basis to promote the
conservation of parrots and the environment, and sustainable
development, in the following ways:

COMMUNITY-BASED CONSERVATION & FIELD RESEARCH PROJECTS
To integrate the needs of people and parrots, by encouraging local
community initiatives aimed at a wiser use of the local environment;
focusing on parrots that can be effective as flagships, to attract more
assistance by local people and relevant authorities and institutions. To
effect field studies which produce the biological and socio-economic
information necessary for the most effective conservation management and
improved land and natural resource use by the local communities; parrot
population monitoring, ecological and behavioural studies, and
reintroduction, protection measures and defining habitats for
preservation and extractive uses all contribute to this objective.

CAPTIVE MANAGEMENT & RESEARCH
To improve the management and reproduction of parrots in captivity,
through a constant evaluation of husbandry techniques and breeding
results of the parrot collection at Loro Parque, and comprehensive
captive research programmes; the information gained can also be applied
to assist with recovery procedures in the wild state. To organise and
participate in coordinated management programmes to establish and
maintain sufficient populations in captivity as a safeguard against
their extinction. To promote training and research opportunities using
the parrot collection, as well as within the in-situ projects that it
supports.

EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
To support and implement grass-roots, community education programmes at
project sites and in countries where parrots occur, as well as broader
awareness campaigns by methods which include publication of a
newsletter, Cyanopsitta, and the hosting of International Parrot
Congresses every four years. The Fundacion also develops and implements
the education programme based at Loro Parque, which uses the collection
of flora and fauna as an educational resource.

Loro Parque is a first-class zoological and botanical park, with a
varied collection of fauna, principally Psittacidae. The Loro Parque
Fundación owns the parrot collection, part of which is exhibited in Loro
Parque, and the larger part maintained in a geographically separate
breeding centre. The Loro Parque Fundación is constituted with a Board
of Trustees, including the President, and has an international Board of
Advisors. At present, the principal personnel of the Fundación are the
Director, Scientific Director and Educator. Loro Parque provides for the
management of the parrot collection, including the services of a team of
keepers headed by a Curator, as well as veterinary assistance. The
Fundación now seeks an Assistant Director for Development.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The Assistant Director for Development should have acquired experience
in the elaboration of substantial conservation proposals, to be
submitted to potential donor agencies and government authorities;
gathered a sound understanding of the conduct, monitoring and management
of field conservation and/or research projects in countries in the
tropics; gained experience in the promotion of conservation activities
at the local, regional and international level; established strong
linkages with various organisations in the conservation community. An
appropriate tertiary qualification in the life sciences is desirable.
Full command of spoken and written English is a must, as well as a high
level of understanding of Spanish; knowledge of Portuguese would be
helpful. The position reports to the Directorate of Loro Parque
Fundación.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
Priority will be given to the drafting of proposals for fund-raising,
policies and new proactive parrot conservation and research programmes;
identification and contacting of potential corporate sponsors;
institutional liaising and development of collaborative ventures;
promoting the objectives and activities of Loro Parque Fundación through
the media; in the medium-term, establishment of a conservation fund and
development of programmes to include other animal and plant groups. The
position is based at the offices of Loro Parque Fundación on Tenerife.

APPLICATION AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Letters of application, supported by curriculum vitae including a salary
history and contact details of three referees, should be sent by e-mail,
fax or mail to the President of the Loro Parque Fundación as soon as
possible. Salary level and other terms of employment will be agreed
through direct arrangement with the President.
