New from the Forest History Society, Forest and Wildlife Science in America: A
History is an important resource for land managers, researchers, and
students,
that traces the history of science in forestry and wildlife management. It
depicts the role science has played in formation of natural resource policy
during the last 100 years; discusses the differences in research as it has
been
affected by organizational missions; and provides historical insights into the
current challenges facing research scientists and land managers today.

Sixteen original chapters that cover both organizational programs and
disciplinary fields are written by the leaders in their fields. Disciplinary
fields addressed include forest ecology and silviculture; genetic
manipulation;
forest economics; statistical methods; technology of wood and fiber; forest
soils; social science; range science; naval stores; and wildlife science.
Histories of organizational programs include industrial forest research;
university research; U.S. Forest Service; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Soil
Conservation Service; and the National Park Service.

Edited by Harold K. Steen, the book is dedicated to four of the authors who
passed away prior to publication. These chapters are the last written by
these
leaders including David Bruce, Marion Clawson, Stanley Gessel, and George
Staebler.

The 455-page book, includes 39 illustrations and can be obtained by
