WOMEN'S STUDIES: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY JOURNAL

Women's Studies provides a forum for the presentation of scholarship and
criticism about women in the fields of literature, history, art,
sociology, law, political science, economics, anthropology and the
sciences. It also publishes poetry, short fiction, film and book
reviews. Authors are encouraged to study The MLA Handbook, and follow
this in preparing their papers.
Typescripts: Papers should be typed with double spacing and wide margins
(1 to 1-1/2 inches) on good quality paper and submitted in triplicate to
the editor. A stamped and self-addressed envelope should accompany the
typescript. Submission of a paper to this journal will be taken to imply
that it represents original work not previously published, that it is
not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for
publication it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any
language, without the consent of editor and publisher. It is a condition
of the acceptance by the editor of a typescript for publication that the
publishers acquire automatically the copyright in the typescript
throughout the world.
Length: The maximum preferred length is 20 typescript pages.
Abstract: Each paper requires an abstract of 100 - 150 words summarizing
the significant points covered.
Illustrations: Where the paper contains illustrations, these should be
numbered with consecutive arabic numbers (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.),
have descriptive captions, and be mentioned in the text. Keep
illustrations separate from the text, but indicate an approximate
position for each in the margin.
Preparation: Illustrations submitted must be of a high enough
standard for direct reproduction. Line drawings should be prepared in
black (India) ink on white paper or tracing cloth, with all necessary
lettering included. Alternatively, good sharp photoprints ("glossies")
are acceptable. Photographs, if submitted, must be good glossy original
prints, of maximum contrast.
Size: Illustrations should be planned so that they reduce easily to
column width (4 1/4").
Captions: A list of illustration captions, with relevant numbers
(Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.), should be set out on a separate sheet and
included with the typescript.
Tables: Much useful data can be collected in tables, but these should
be presented in a clear and concise form to help both typesetter and
reader. Draw a horizontal rule at the head and at the foot of the table,
with one rule after column headings. Number tables consecutively with
roman numerals (Table I, Table II, etc.), and put a clear descriptive
caption at the top of each table. Avoid the use of vertical rules in
tables.
References and Notes: Literature referenced and other notes should be
indicated in the text by consecutive superior arabic numbers. The full
list of references and notes should be collected and typed at the end of
the paper in numerical order. Listed references should be complete in
all details including, in quotes, article titles in journals. Authors'
initials should precede their names, journal title abbreviations should
conform to The MLA International Bibliography. Examples:
1. C. M. Pierce. "Our most crucial domestic issue." Amer. Jour.
Psychiat., 125 (1969), 11-32.
2. G. Myrdal. Challenge to Affluence (New York: Vintage Books,
1965), Chap. 2, pp. 37-45.
Numbered notes and references will be listed at the end of the paper
when set in type (they will not be set as footnotes, as this presents
many typographical problems).
Proofs: Authors will receive proofs (including illustrations) by
airmail for correction, which must be returned to the printer within 48
hours of receipt. The full postal address of the person who will be
responsible for reading proofs should be included with the typescript;
this will ensure that proofs are not delayed in the post. Authors'
alterations in excess of 10% of the original composition cost will be
charged to authors.
Reprints: Primary authors will receive 25 free reprints.
