POSITION:                       Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management 
 
                                12-month position, tenure-track

STARTING DATE:          August 1, 1999

LOCATION:                       Department of Natural Resources
                                New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
                                Cornell University
                                Ithaca, NY 14853

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The successful candidate will develop a nationally
recognized teaching (50%) and research (50%) program focusing on
cutting-edge wildlife ecology and management issues and related scientific
questions.  This applied ecology position will integrate the theoretical
and practical applications of wildlife science with pertinent wildlife
management issues.  Teaching responsibilities will include two upper level
wildlife ecology and management courses, and a graduate level course in the
area of the candidate's specialization.  These courses should lay the
foundation for student understanding of the dynamic nature of wildlife
ecology and management from local to global contexts.  The research
component should bring contemporary science to bear on important wildlife
management needs.  Collaboration with the NYS Department of Environmental
Conservation- Bureau of Wildlife, provides an opportunity for impact on
real-world management problems that can, in turn, provide examples for
teaching.  The individual will seek external support, administer operating
budgets, mentor students, and contribute significantly to the wildlife
ecology and management profession through journal articles and other
peer-reviewed publications.  Cooperation is expected with other university
faculty, scientists with the NY Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit,
Cornell Cooperative Extension educators, and biologists with state and
federal natural resource management agencies.  Service to society through
consultation and advisement is expected of all faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
        --  Ph.D. degree in wildlife science, wildlife ecology, wildlife
management, conservation biology, zoology, or a closely related field.
        --  Evidence of scholarship and depth of knowledge in the concepts of
wildlife management, multiple use, conservation of renewable resources, and
applied ecology.  
--  Demonstrated ability to teach and inspire both undergraduate and
graduate students.
        --  Demonstrated ability to attract extramural research support and
coordinate an innovative research program.  
--  Experience with organismal biology with a special interest in one or
more of the terrestrial vertebrate groups.
