The Denver Public Library announces a Fellowship in Environmental
History for the year 2002 in the amount of $3,000.  This fellowship is
made possible through the generosity of Joy R. Hilliard.  It is open to
advanced graduate students, holders of the Ph.D. or equivalent, and
independent scholars.

The Conservation Collection is extensive.  Some of the 200+ holdings
are:  The Wilderness Society, Izaak Walton League of America, American
Bison Society, Arthur Carhart's manuscripts, William Vogt, Hugh H.
Bennett, Stanley P. Young, Ira Gabrielson, Walter P. Taylor, Wild Horse
Annie, Alaska Coalition, Harry Ben Crandell, John M. Kauffmann, Mineral
Policy Center, American Farmland Trust, American Rivers, Outdoor Writers
Association of America.

Requirements for the fellowship include: conservation/environmental
academic training and experience and a written prospectus describing
general subject area and how working with the Conservation Collection
will be beneficial to the applicant's research goals.  Awardee must be
in residence a minimum of 3 weeks between May 1, 2002 and April 30,
2003.  A written report must be submitted within three months of
departure from the library.

Application:  Along with prospectus, provide a cover letter with the
following information: name, mailing address for future correspondence,
telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, present position and
institution name, name of fellowship and brief description of the
prospectus included.  There is no application form.  Include three
references, one of which must be a Ph.D. or equivalent.  Graduate
students must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member
familiar with his/her work and proposed project.  Full curriculum vitae
must accompany prospectus.

Send materials postmarked no later than MARCH 15, 2002 to:  Manager,
Western History/Genealogy Department, Denver Public Library, 10 W. 14th
