Niagara

A multidisciplinary conference is planned for April 25-27, 2003 at the
Hilton, Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Call for Papers

Papers are invited from a broad range of research areas related to the
Falls, including popular culture and visual arts, legend, literature,
geology, archaeology, history, economics, politics, and Canada-US
relations. The conference aims to examine:

* What Niagara Falls has meant to people from discovery through the 21st
century; the gorge as chronometer; the river as border; international trade
and business; immigration; environmental issues; indigenous and settler
populations;

* What people do at Niagara; where they stand to contemplate nature's
marvel; how they move around the site physically;   tourism and
transportation; the riverscape in art, literature, photography;

* How women experience Niagara; how Canada fits into representations of
Niagara Falls; historical and legendary  characters of Niagara's landscape;
Niagara as sex and symbol; popular culture and mass media; honeymooning.

* Niagara as a site of Canada-US relations in the economic and political
domain.

Please send submissions by August 15, 2002 to the ACS office.
