39TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE - KUCHING
EDUCATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT: towards equitable and sustainable development.

Tuesday August 6th to Saturday August 10th 1996

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME:

1) Themes: The main themes for Focus Group discussion and action 
have been identified and include:

  Environment education through the standard curriculum
 
  The role of the visual and performing arts in Environment 
Education
 
  Tackling the equity issues involved in Environment Education
 
  Educating for change in industry and the work place
 
  Educating adults for sustainable systems of consumption and care
 
  Early childhood education - first steps in Environment Education 
(nurturing a sense of wonder)
 
  Alternative technologies and technology transfer - challenge and 
opportunity
 
  Training teachers for Environmental Education
 
  The feelings of youth on environment - recognising today's 
motivational force.

2) Groups: Participants will choose which Focus Groups they wish to 
attend and will be members of small, permanent Conference Review 
Groups which will meet daily to consider progress and value of the 
Conference.

3) Speakers

Dr. David Suzuki, Professor of Genetics, University of British 
Columbia, internationally recognised environmental scientist and 
author, producer of educational programmes (Canadian Broadcasting 
Corporation) - "Towards the New Millennium".

Dr. Tara Collis, Dr. Suzuki's wife, will also contribute, particularly in 
respect of the role of women in Environmental Education.

Miss Severn Suzuki will speak (as she did at the Rio Earth Summit) and 
assist in the youth forum component of the Conference.

Dr Suwarto Martosudirjo (Bandung, Indonesia) and Mr Martin Thomas, 
A.M. (Perth, Western Australia) - both leading figures in work on Non-
Conventional Energy Research, will keynote the topic: Alternative 
Technologies - Technology Transfer - Challenge and Opportunity.

Dr David Turner, University of East London, England, and a member of 
WEF Guiding Committee, will speak on WEF's Role in the History of 
Environmental Education.

Professor Ian Lowe, Head of Science Faculty, Griffith University, 
Queensland, and Chair of National Environmental Education 
Workshop, Canberra, 1995, will keynote Environment Education 
through the Standard Curriculum, and Preparing Teachers for an 
Environmentally Conscious Future.

Ms Kerrie Strathy (Fiji), South Pacific Action Committee for Human 
Ecology and Environment, University of South Pacific, and Mr. 
Lawrence Tsui (Macau) will represent the International Council for 
Adult Education and speak on Women and Environmental Education in 
the South Pacific, and Community-based Environmental Education 
respectively.

Dr Martin Khor (Malaysia) World Wildlife Fund, and Tan Sri Khir Johari
have been invited and, with others, will help keynote the issue of
Consumption and Environmental Education for the General Public.

Dr Rex Andrews and Dr Ahmed Mettar (invited) will keynote Spiritual 
and Religious Perspectives on Environment and their Implications for 
Educators.

Professor Ghazally Ismail, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UNIMAS, will 
present a paper on aspects Biodiversity for Educators.

Dr James Hemming will present a short paper on Values in 
Environmental Education, Nurture and Developing a Sense of Wonder.

In the field of Early Childhood, interest in presenting papers is strong.

Professor Victor Papanek, University of Kansas, has been invited and 
would highlight the topic Design for an Environmentally Conscious 
World.

IUCN, UNESCO, OECD will, we hope, wish to participate in our 
Conference.

Offers of papers received to date include a very broad and interesting 
coverage of the conference theme.

4) Cultural Activities and Field Trips

The UNIMAS Committee arranging these plans a visit to the Sarawak Cultural
Village, and excursion to Bako National Park, and a trip to wildlife
sancturies.

Arrangements have been made for a visit to the Sarawak Cultural 
Village. School and University visits are being coordinated.

An experienced Environment Education teacher has offered to conduct a 
Rainforest Experience close to Santubong.


4) Young Teachers and Youth Participants

It is planned for several WEF Sections to arrange selection and 
sponsorship of a young teacher and/or student. Conference organisers 
see this plan as likely to enrich the conference and create significant 
influence in curriculum and attitudes around the world after the 
conference.

Those wishing to submit papers on any of the Conference Themes or 
directly related topics are invited to submit titles and a brief indication

Programme organisers will attempt to arrange presentation of as many 
papers as possible. Other aecepted papers will be circulated and/or 
published in the Conference Proceedings. It is expected that papers will 
be between 2000 and 5000 words. Modern projection and amplification 
facilities are available at Santubong.

Intending contributors will be advised of format and word processing 
format, etc.

Intention to submit papes should be received as soon as possible but no later
than mid-May.

ACCOMPANYING PERSONS

It is clear that the programme being planned by the UNIMAS 
Committee will be an interesting and enjoyable one meeting many 
varying tastes. It will of course be optional.

VENUE: Santubong Kuching  Resort and Conference Centre.
Accommodation is in spacious, individually air-conditioned 
rooms, close to the Conference Centre, restaurant and large 
swimming pool. There are many recreational facilities 
available also, including tennis and golf.

ACCESS: Flights to Kuching are available from Kuala Lumpur and 
Singapore (several daily Malaysian Airlines and Singapore Airlines), 
and from Hong Kong (Dragonair-Cathay Pacific, several flights each 
week.)
Transit to Santubong will be arranged for delegates arriving on specified 
flights.
Access to Santubong is easy and not expensive.

PRE and POST-CONFERENCE TOURS

Arrnagements are being made for those who wish to visit, for example, Niah
National Park, Mulu National Park, Kelabit Highlands, and Samunsam Wildlife
Reserve.

There are many other opportunities in Sarawak, West Malaysia and other
countries.

COST:

WEF members and others able to pay the registration fee by April 20th 
will automatically be accepted.  The fee will be as advised in the 
Preliminary Notice.  We gather from UNIMAS that the Final Notice is 
likely to advise a slightly higher fee for later applicants.

airport transfers for specified flights, and a copy of the Conference 
Proceedings. WEF Sections please note that the registration fee for
