               LYMAN T. JOHNSON MINORITY POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
                      AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY



In 1991 the Lyman T. Johnson Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was
established in the Office of the Vice President for Research and
Graduate Studies in honor of the University of Kentucky's first
African-American student.  The objective of the program is the
enhancement of African American contributions to the Academy.
The program supports postdoctoral candidates  in underrepresented
graduate and professional areas.

The University of Kentucky Office of Research and Graduate
Studies is now accepting applications for the Lyman T. Johnson
Minority Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for the 1996-97 academic
year.

Awardees are expected to pursue an individualized program of
advanced training in research under the mentorship of one or more
UK professors and to participate in research, teaching, and
service to the University and to their professions.
Specifically, fellows should take a lead role in designing,
developing, and implementing research programs that contribute
to their departments' overall graduate education and research
mandates.

ELIGIBILITY:   African American students and other traditionally
underrepresented minorities as defined by federal guidelines who
are American citizens or permanent U.S. residents and who will
have completed the doctoral degree within the past two years are
eligible to apply.

SELECTION CRITERIA include evidence of scholarship potentially
competitive for tenure-track faculty appointment in research
universities and compatibility of specific research interests
with those present in doctorate-granting units on campus.

SUPPORT:    Fellowships will provide a $25,000 stipend plus
$5,000 awarded for research support.

PERIOD OF FELLOWSHIPS are for up to 2 years beginning with the
Fall Semester 1996.

APPLICATIONS SHOULD INCLUDE a curriculum vitae; sample
publications or dissertation chapters; a research  proposal
(1,500 words or less, in addition to figures, schemes and
references); three letters of recommendation, and a letter from
the potential UK mentor indicating an outline of the general
research program.

COMPLETED APPLICATIONS should be sent to the Office of the Vice
President  for Research and Graduate Studies; University of
Kentucky; 207 Administration Building;Lexington, KY 40506-0032 by
March 22, 1996.
