We would like to draw your attention to our special session at the
next AGU Fall Meeting 2015 in San Francisco, USA (14 - 18 December 2015):

**Beyond Plant Functional Types: Advances in Simulating Species-Specific Responses to Climate Change**
Session ID: 8890
SECTION/FOCUS GROUP: Biogeosciences (B)
CONVENERS/AFFILIATIONS:
Christopher J Still, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR
John B Kim, USFS
Marie Dury, Oregon State University

Yueyang Jiang, Oregon State University

DESCRIPTION:
Plant functional types (PFTs) used in the current generation of terrestrial biosphere models are highly generalized and simplified representations of the mosaic of vegetation comprising biomes. PFTs generally fail to represent the highly diverse species-specific plant traits in ecohydrology, reproduction, dispersal, and adaptations to disturbances, which can have regional and global consequences as they determine vegetation dynamics and responses to climate change and disturbances, such as drought, insect outbreaks and wildfire.

In this session, we invite presentations of model designs and experiments that explore, advance and evaluate the ability to represent species-specific traits and dynamics in next generation terrestrial biosphere models for use in earth system models.
