The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the
University of California, Berkeley seeks a recent PhD with experience in
forest management or modeling to participate in its research project on
integrating the production of forest-based biofuel feedstocks with
improving forest health and resiliency in California. The project will
utilize plot-based inventory, growth, and disturbance data from all
private and public forest lands, transportation networks, and processing
facilities for all of California to provide a spatially explicit
analysis of forest productivity, product outputs, and changes in fire
risks. The project will work with a dynamic version of the FIA BioSum
model that addresses fire risks over the course of forest stand
development. The project requires experience with the Forest Vegetation
Simulator (FVS) growth model and experience in calibrating it to
empirical conditions, especially chronic and episodic mortality. A
statewide BioSum model framework will allow the results of other tasks
to be applied in spatially and statistically relevant scenarios.
