Duties and Responsibilities Teach (or co-teach) core undergraduate and graduate course(s), such as NREM301 Introduction to Natural Resource Management, NREM304 Fundamentals of Soil Science, NREM612 Predicting and Controlling the Degradation of Human-dominated Terrestrial Ecosystems. Develop an new undergraduate or graduate course(s) in individual’s areas of expertise that meet instructional needs. Possible topics include Soil Ecology, Biogeochemistry, and Global Change Biology. Advise undergraduate and graduate students in directed research and thesis credits. Conduct basic or applied research in soil science, soil biogeochemistry, soil carbon cycling and sequestration, sustainability science and/or bioenergy production systems. Research should address current issues of global change, with emphasis on both natural and managed terrestrial ecosystems. Topics could include, but are not limited to, soil carbon formation and decomposition, global change biology, production ecology, sustainability, and/or soil nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas flux. Pursue extramural grants and contracts from public and private sources to fund research on environmental issues relevant to Hawaii and the Pacific Basin as well as global issues. Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. from a college or university of recognized standing in Ecology, Natural Resources, Soil Science or related field with a research emphasis in one or more of the areas listed above. Demonstrated ability to work within interdisciplinary teams and to integrate knowledge from natural and social sciences in addressing soil and ecosystem management issues. Excellent oral and written communication skills. College-level teaching experience. At least 3 years post-doctoral research experience. Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of and experience in subtropical and tropical ecosystems and management practices, particularly in small island settings. Experience in undergraduate and graduate advising. Publication of research in scholarly journals and demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding. Experience developing and teaching distance learning courses.
