October 3, 2016 Budget Title: Research Assistant Campus Title: Biodiversity Scientist Department: Environmental and Forest Biology Salary: High 40’s to maximum of $50,000 (Commensurate with experience) Duration: One year, with possible extension The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY invites qualified applications for the position of Research Assistant (Biodiversity Scientist). This position will oversee the Joint Initiative “Integrating Wildlife Conservation on Private Lands of the Northeast.” The initiative is a partnership between the Fuller Center for Productive Landscapes at Overlook, a living laboratory for exploring the role of place in cultural and environmental sustainability based in northeastern Pennsylvania, and the Roosevelt Wild Life Station, a historic research center within SUNY ESF’s Department of Environmental and Forest Biology that seeks to deliver the science and trained professionals needed to preserve our wildlife heritage and save imperiled species worldwide. The initiative seeks to generate the guidance and trained professionals needed to enable landowners of the northeastern U.S. to foster sustainable resource management and thereby to assure the long-term health of landscapes and wildlife populations. By “wildlife” we mean all life that is wild, that is, biodiversity. We are especially interested in promoting innovative actions on private lands that protect exemplary elements of biological diversity and restore degraded habitat while fostering mixed-use enterprises that support broader stewardship and legacy goals. This position will require Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships and collaborate with diverse personalities including students, faculty, landowners, design professionals and natural resource managers, and donors. We are particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Build network of collaborating landowners in the northeastern United States to advance initiative’s impacts. • Collaborate with property holders in region to develop rapid site-focused biological inventories as a service-oriented, self-supporting enterprise. • Develop a peer-reviewed guide for promoting biodiversity conservation on private lands in both digital and print forms along with supporting materials. • Organize and undertake annual biological surveys at the Overlook property with student involvement to advance cultural and restoration efforts for the property. • Deliver one undergraduate course annually (spring semester- Senior Synthesis in Conservation Biology) with two components: classroom (ca. 60 students) and field (10 days for 10 students at Overlook property). • Secure external support as needed and strategic to advance initiative beyond base funding. • Develop and execute research projects as needed to advance the goals of the Initiative. • Oversee in-person, social media-based, technical and popular communications for the Initiative. • Oversee activities of 1-2 seasonal support technicians associated with this position. • Administer and track internal funding associated with the Initiative. • Report on project activities to donors and Department as required. • Assist in advancing related Roosevelt Wild Life Station programs. Required Qualifications: • MSc graduate degree or higher in conservation biology, wildlife biology, applied ecology or comparable field. • At least five years of professional experience working in biodiversity conservation. • Knowledge of biota of the northeastern U.S. including its identification, natural history and conservation. • Ability to apply science to advance biodiversity conservation at the site- and landscape-level. • Experience teaching undergraduate students in classroom and field contexts. • Track record of timely production of high quality publications for both technical and popular audiences. Preferred Qualifications: • PhD in conservation biology, wildlife biology, applied ecology or comparable field. • Training in landscape architecture / design.
