We're looking to hire some last-minute help in the field in July and also for lab work later this summer! Here's the job description:
Biological Field/Lab Technician Dates: July 1-15 with potential to extend into September Location: Based in Fort Collins, CO with field travel to south-eastern CO (Purgatoire River). Candidate must have the ability to be in Fort Collins, ready to work on July 1. The position is for a biological technician to assist US Forest Service scientists with field and lab work relating to riparian plant ecological research. The primary task is to assist with plant field work on the Purgatoire River in southeastern Colorado July 7-14. There is further work to assist with lab processing of plant samples from multiple sites and also database work. RESPONSIBILITIES: Field work on the Purgatoire River July 7-14 will include plant cover sampling along transects, plant identification and plant traits sampling (height, DBH, leaf area, leaf samples for isotopes, canopy cover, etc). Lab work will include weighing, drying and grinding leaf samples, analyzing leaf area using computer software tools, and computer data entry. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a four-year degree or currently be enrolled at a college or university pursuing a degree in ecology, natural resource management, environmental studies, range management, forestry, or other similar area. Candidates must be in good physical condition, capable of working long days in the field under hot, rugged conditions. Ability to work under hot, rugged conditions is essential. Candidates should be comfortable working in the backcountry. Candidates must have excellent attention to detail and focus during repetitive tasks. Must be a hard worker, good listener, respectful of people and equipment, and work well both in a team and independent working situations. Skills in the following areas are valuable but not required: botany, plant sample weighing, drying and leaf grinding, experience in a chemistry lab setting, experience with data entry and databases, an understanding of plant physiology, and experience with backcountry travel. Candidates must be US citizens.
