Dear Ecolog-Listers: How long should a strong letter of recommendation be? Background: Throughout my career, I have written many of letters of recommendation. I try to keep them ca. 1 page long (single space, font 10-12, depending how much I want to say). Someone has suggested to me that a letter for medical school application should be "at least 2 pages long" (I assume single spaced). That seems to me awful long to me.
Can I have some feedback on what *you* do (not from the web as I already checked)? I reason that with so many letters of recommendation to process, readers are grateful when writers get to the key points with examples promptly.
