Dear colleagues, Odum Conference 2009 has extended the registration and poster abstract deadlines until April 15, 2009, or until we have reached our full capacity, whichever comes first. Both overnight accommodations and poster display space are close to being filled, so we suggest that you act quickly if you wish to stay overnight or submit an abstract.
Odum Conference 2009, "Understanding and managing biological invasions as dynamic
processes: integrating information across space and time," will be held April 30 –
May 1, 2009.

Venue: The Rensselaerville Meeting Center, and the E.N. Huyck Preserve &
Biological Research Station, both in a lovely, rural setting in Rensselaerville,
New York, 25 miles from Albany.

Organizing Institutions: E.N. Huyck Preserve & Biological Research Station, the
Ecological Research Institute, and the New York Invasive Species Research Institute.

This event will feature, as invited speakers, many of the most prominent
figures in invasion ecology, management, and policy. For the speaker list,
visit: http://nyisri.org/odumspeakers.aspx

Additionally, the conference will include a poster session and field workshops.
For a complete conference program, visit: http://nyisri.org/odumprogram.aspx

Theme: This conference will focus on: 1) incorporating a long-term perspective
into invasion ecology and management; 2) developing specific mechanisms to
assemble and evaluate the needed data; and 3) fostering a collaborative
research-management approach in which broad patterns are used to yield specific
management recommendations.

Poster Submissions: We are calling for abstracts for posters addressing one or more of the following themes: a) invasive species monitoring and database initiatives; b) collaborative undertakings between invasive species ecologists and managers; c) invasive species management activities that incorporate a dynamic aspect (e.g., climate change, natural enemy acquisition, interactions of multiple invasive species); and d) basic research on dynamic aspects of invasions. The deadline for abstract submission is now April 15, 2009. For submission procedures please visit: http://nyisri.org/odumposters.aspx
Professional Credits: The following professional organizations will be granting
credits for attending this conference:
- Society of American Foresters
- International Society of Arboriculture
- Connecticut Certified Commerical Forest Practitioner
For details, and for an updated list of credit-awarding organizations, visit:
http://nyisri.org/OdumProfCred.aspx

Field workshops: 1) "Beech Bark Disease History, Status, and Consequences" will visit sites
surveyed by Eugene Odum in the 1930s and see how this invasive disease affected the successional changes he
predicted; 2) "iMapInvasives Field and Data Entry Workshop" will provide an opportunity to be among
the first to use this highly innovative and interactive invasives mapping and database tool, which is about
to go into use in several states; and 3) "Invasive Earthworm Effects on Salamanders" will examine
complex interactions between the earthworms and these native amphibians.

New deadlines; We have extended both the registration and abstract submission
deadlines to April 15. However, poster submissions and registrations will be
closed earlier, if and when full capacity has been reached. Both overnight
accommodations and poster display space are close to being filled, so we
suggest that you act quickly if you wish to stay overnight or make a submission.
