Job Summary

The Center for Microbial Systems Molecular Biology Laboratory offers high 
throughput 
automated DNA extraction and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using the 
Illumina MiSeq 
platform. NGS services are provided to laboratories at the University of 
Michigan as part of the 
Host Microbiome Initiative and to external clients from institutions worldwide. 
The laboratory is 
seeking a technician with NGS experience to join our growing Center for 
Microbial Systems 
team.

Responsibilities*

The Research Laboratory Tech will assist with sample handling and the Illumina 
MiSeq 
sequencing pipeline in the lab.

Duties include:

Receipt of samples, DNA extraction, library preparation for 16S rRNA gene 
amplicon, bacterial 
genome or metagenome sequencing, DNA and library quantification, quality 
assurance testing, 
MiSeq sequencing, data acquisition and distribution, and generation of run 
metric reports for 
clients.

Development of new techniques and protocols for the lab at the bench and on the 
epMotion 
automated liquid handler.

Standard operating procedure (SOP) and best practices authorship.

Participation in weekly lab meetings, microbiome seminars and trainings or 
workshops related to 
the responsibilities of the position.

Additional duties include but are not limited to routine lab maintenance, 
inventory of 
consumables and reagents, dishwashing and autoclaving, preparation of stock 
solutions and 
equipment maintenance.

Required Qualifications*

HS Diploma or Associates Degree and 1-3 years experience required.
Applicant must have strong meticulous record keeping and computer skills.  
Excellent organizational, time management, multi-tasking and problem-solving 
skills are 
required. 
Necessary prerequisites include a high degree of motivation and communication 
skills, the focus 
to process routine high-throughput sampling with consistent quality control 
standards, and the 
ability to think and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a 
team supporting the 
Center for Microbial Systems laboratories and the Host Microbiome Initiative. 

Desired Qualifications*

A Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology or other related field.  
4-5 years of experience in a related field with a minimum of one year of Next 
Generation 
Sequencing laboratory experience. 
Experience with the following techniques: nucleic acid isolation and 
quantification, PCR and 
qPCR, gel electrophoresis, NGS library construction.
Previous experience with the following laboratory equipment: PCR and qPCR 
instrumentation, 
Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100, Illumina MiSeq. 
Previous experience with method development, biological sample processing, 
high-throughput 
work flow and managing reagent and consumables inventory for cost analysis 
purposes.
Experience or interest to learn new procedures and methods including 
programming and 
operating the Eppendorf epMotion liquid handling system.
