Director, Research & Education Programs

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce the search
for a Director of Research and Education Programs. This is a regular,
full-time, exempt position. The position will report to the President
and CEO of the organization.

The Director, Research & Education Programs provides strategic and
programmatic oversight and staff supervision for Ocean Leadership's
research and education related programs including the national and
international Census of Marine Life (CoML), National Ocean
Partnership Program (NOPP), Interagency Working Group on Ocean
Observations (IWGOO), and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB)
programs. In conjunction with the President & CEO, he/she serves as a
co-principal investigator on government and privately supported
grants, contracts, panels and steering committees associated with
ocean science research and education. This individual also serves as
a technical and managerial resource to the President & CEO and leads
the program, budget and staff of the Research and Education units of
Ocean Leadership.

This strategic leadership role oversees the development, preparation
and delivery of annual short and long-range program plans related to
NOPP, IWGOO, CoML, NOSB, and other related research and education
programs; encourages and facilitates collaboration with related
scientific programs and the development of cooperative joint ventures
that enhance the US role in ocean research; and monitors the
efficiency and effectiveness of all research and educational related
programs and/or services. Develops and implements programmatic and
financial strategies accordingly. This role works collaboratively
with internal and external constituents to lead, drive, and support
grant and contract activities.

Qualified applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in
a relevant field and a minimum of ten years experience in scientific
research and scientific program/project management. Familiarity with
the ocean research and education community preferred. Demonstrated
experience in managing federal grants and contracts to include
understanding of the federal agency research and funding processes is
essential. This role also requires proven scientific understanding and
judgment; proven leadership skills, and; demonstrated people, program
and fiscal management experience in a complex environment; strengths
in team building, delegation including a willingness to communicate
openly, listen well, learn from others, and lead through persuasion.
Exceptional communication skills and experience are required
including the ability to relate well to scientists, academicians,
government agency personnel, staff and the public.
