Marek Landscaping, LLC is a design-build company founded in 1996 that provides sustainable design & construction services using low-impact design methods for native aquatic, riparian, upland, and woodland restorations, shoreline stabilizations, stormwater and erosion control best management practices, multi-use trails, parks and landscapes. We also develop and implement land management plans for these projects ensuring long-term health and viability. Current projects include bluff, shoreline, and wetland restorations for large public projects, non- profits, and private residences.
We are currently seeking a Research Intern to assist in a grant-funded monitoring project on our floating islands. For more information on the floating islands, please see our website. The internship will be full- time and last for 10 weeks with an ideal start date of June 1st. Duties will include: • Assistance with re-launch of the floating islands into the river from their winter storage location. • Collection of field data samples with our team, including underwater filming, island core and water samples, and visual surveys for both plant and animal data. • Animal data entry from field samples, including: o Lab analysis of island core and water samples to identify and count aquatic macroinvertebrates using a microscope. o Possible post-processing and fish identification from underwater filming. o Possible identification of herptiles, terrestrial macroinvertebrates, and birds from photographs taken by field crew during visual surveys. • Vegetation data entry from field surveys into database. • Statistical and graphical analysis of data to help generate final report. • Potential assistance with island maintenance, including garbage cleanup and bracket repair. Preferred Qualifications: • Completed or pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or related field. • High attention to detail and great organization skills. • Effective communication and strong time management skills. • Able to work independently and follow direction. • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and statistical software, especially R. • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, especially use of dissecting microscope. • Previous experience using identification techniques, including dichotomous keys and field guides.
