M.S. Graduate Assistantship
Stephen F. Austin State University Position description: A research assistantship is currently available for an M.S. student in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, Stephen F. Austin State University studying the effects of pine savannah restoration on bird communities in eastern Texas. This project is one component of a research initiative examining wildlife and forest management on private lands and is funded by the Simon and Louise Henderson Institute for wildlife research. Duties will include bird surveys by sight and calls, mist netting, vegetation sampling and analysis, and assessment of reproductive parameters for target species (Bachman's sparrow, prairie warbler, northern bobwhite). Stipend is $1,500 per month, with a waiver of out of state tuition. Qualifications: Position requires a B.S. in wildlife science, forestry, biology, or related field. A strong work ethic and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are required, as is a strong interest in avian ecology and management. The demonstrated ability to identify birds by sight or sound is also required and experience with mist netting and identification of woody and nonwoody plants is highly desirable. Minimum academic qualifications include GRE scores ? 1000 (verbal + quantitative) and undergraduate GPA ? 3.0. Willingness and ability to obtain a valid Texas driver's license is required.
