Hello all,

Please see below for an opportunity for graduate study in my lab at the
University of Idaho. Please forward to any interested parties and apologies
for any double postings.

Graduate assistantships in adult steelhead conservation and management at the
University of Idaho.

I am seeking applicants to fill a two-year graduate assistantship (MSc)
studying migration and life history ecology of Endangered Species Act-listed
upper Columbia River steelhead as part of a collaborative project with
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Students will be associated with a
research consortium motivated by questions about the migration ecology of
fishes (http://www.uidaho.edu/cnr/research/researchprograms/ferl) and will
engage in a strong collaboration with WDFW biologists (Andrew Murdoch, Charles
Snow and McLain Johnson).

The primary purpose of the 2 year study will be to use radiotelemetry to
validate estimates of hatchery and wild steelhead abundance and distribution
based on PIT tags. Additional substantial opportunity exists to addressed
additional question such as:

1. Migration and overwinter survival patterns of hatchery and wild fish
in the Columbia, Methow and Okanogan watersheds.
2. Overwinter habitat use and survival of hatchery and wild steelhead
3. Spawn timing and location of hatchery and wild steelhead
4. Spawning site selection and redd microhabitat of hatchery and wild
steelhead
5. Influence of rearing and release location on the homing fidelity of
hatchery steelhead

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and collaborative individual with
a BS degree in a relevant fields of study (e.g. biology, ecology & evolution)
with coursework in chemistry and statistics, field experience in aquatic or
fish ecology, and desire to apply interdisciplinary approaches to questions in
fish and aquatic ecology. The ability to work both independently and in
collaborative settings will be essential. Competitive stipend with full
tuition waivers will be available. Ideally, the selected student will arrive
in late spring on a research assistantship to participate in field work during
2015 and fully matriculate in the fall.

The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected; initial
review of applications will begin mid-February.

How to Apply: Please email the following to Chris Caudill
(caud...@uidaho.edu<mailto:caud...@uidaho.edu>): (1) a resume or CV; (2) a
letter of interest, including research interests, professional goals and prior
experience, and (3) contact information for three references. Prior to
acceptance, students must also apply to the University of Idaho College of
Graduate Studies (see www.grad.uidaho.edu<http://www.grad.uidaho.edu/>).
