Opportunity for MS Degree focusing on forest science and information
management with the Andrews LTER

The HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and Long Term Ecological Research (LTER)
Site has funding for a student to pursue a Master’s Degree focusing on
Information Management in the Forest Ecosystems and Society Department,
starting by Fall 2016. The ideal student would have a mix of interests in
ecology, natural resources and computer science and be interested in using
tools such as MatLab, Python, R, SQL Server and other SQL solutions.

The thesis project would involve analysis, modelling, or visualization of
long-term data to address an ecological question of interest to the student
and the LTER. This would be an ideal opportunity for someone wanting to
learn how to evaluate and manage extensive long-term, short-term, and
streaming data and to work with information managers and scientists from a
variety of disciplines. While there will be some opportunities to gain
field experience during the course of the Master’s program, the thesis will
not involve collecting new field data as a major component. Those
interested in this opportunity are strongly encouraged to visit the Andrews
Forest webpage (http://andrewsforest.oregonstate.edu/)to become familiar
with the program and the types of long-term datasets available, and the
Forest Ecosystems and Society webpage (http://fes.forestry.oregonstate.edu/)
for information on the graduate program.

To be considered, please submit your CV and a letter detailing your
pertinent experience and interests (the letter should reflect basic
understanding of the Andrews LTER and the scope of this particular graduate
opportunity) to Mark Schulze (mark.schu...@oregonstate.edu) by February
19th. Serious candidates must be prepared to complete an application for
admission to the Forest Ecosystems and Society graduate program by March
4th, if requested. For more information, please contact Mark Schulze,
Andrews Forest Director or Sherri Johnson, USFS Team Lead, Andrews
Experimental Forest (sherrijohn...@fs.fed.us).
