RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, Job Requisition 188320
CENTER FOR WATER AND THE ENVIRONMENT
NATURAL RESOURCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE - (www.nrri.umn.edu)
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA - DULUTH

The Center for Water and the Environment, Natural Resources Research
Institute (NRRI) at the University of Minnesota Duluth seeks a full-time
researcher specializing in diatoms and other physical, chemical and
biological entities as indicators of limnological condition. Projects are
likely to include experiments, monitoring programs, and paleolimnological
applications in the Great Lakes, small lakes, rivers, and wetlands.
Environmental issues will include, but are not limited to, eutrophication,
food web contamination, invasive species, climate change, habitat loss, and
multi-stressor/response relationships.

The new Research Associate will join an existing aquatic research group at
NRRI. Responsibilities will include publication and grantsmanship; field,
lab and data analysis; interaction with diverse natural resource related
agencies and the general public, and supervision of technical staff working
on several large, multi-year projects. Current projects include: long-term
trends in conditions of the Great Lakes, paleolimnology of Minnesota lakes
and the St. Louis River Estuary, protist assessments for ballast water
treatment system testing; other studies of the water quality trends in
regional lakes, wetlands, and rivers; and outreach to citizens and
organizations. Although current funding for projects is substantial, the
candidate will be expected to develop his/her own externally funded research
program. Immediate responsibilities may include: identification,
documentation and data analysis of Great Lakes diatoms and associated water
quality and stressors; writing articles for peer reviewed scientific
journals using existing data; and participating in other project, Center,
and Institute activities. While this position description lists immediate
needs and expectations, there will be opportunities for the candidate to
teach, arrange symposia and workshops, participate in graduate programs, and
bring new research ideas to the NRRI team.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. PhD in any of the biological, geological, or environmental sciences
from a regionally accredited college or university;
2. Three years post-PhD experience in: freshwater diatom taxonomy,
limnological and phycological field sampling, laboratory preparation and
data analysis;
3. Experience working independently and working as part of a team
conducting multidisciplinary research;
4.      Experience managing project scopes and budgets;
5. Excellent skills with statistical software (e.g. R and multivariate
analyses) and additional data analysis, management, and visualization skills
(database design, web technologies, etc.);
6. Experience advising (e.g. supervising undergraduate and/or graduate
students and/or technicians);
7. Experience working effectively with state, federal and private
organizations, obtaining research grants and developing collaborations and
partnerships with scientists (e.g. from academia, governmental agencies,
NGOs, and the private sector), and having a high potential for national and
international recognition;
8. Record of scientific achievement as indicated by publications in
peer-reviewed scientific literature and research grant awards;
9. Excellent written proficiency and communication skills in the
English language.

Desired Qualifications:

1. Experience with monitoring and paleolimnological assessments, diatom
ecology and assemblage-based assessments of aquatic condition;
2. Demonstrated oral and communication skills in the English language
and demonstrated writing capabilities, including prior grant writing
experience, report writing, and manuscript publication;
3. Experience with coordination of symposia and workshops,
participating in graduate programs, teaching academic courses and initiating
research programs.
