A PhD position is available immediately in the lab of Dr. Barb Thomas (
http://people.ales.ualberta.ca/barbthomas) in the Department of Renewable
Resources at the University of Alberta.

We are seeking a PhD student to investigate the mechanisms underpinning the
stand structure and gender distribution of trembling aspen (*Populus
tremuloides*) along the boreal fringe. The student will select and sample
aspen stands along the boreal forest fringe and link physiological and
phenological responses to growth, wood quality characteristics and sex.
This project is part of a broader study that aims to understand the role of
sex and ecophysiological responses in shaping the distribution and
long-term survival of aspen under climate change.

Preference will be given to prospective students that have a background and
interest in forestry, ecology, genetics, ecophysiology and fieldwork.
Prospective students must apply through UofA Graduate Studies (
https://www.ualberta.ca/agriculture-life-environment-
sciences/programs/graduate-programs/renewable-resources); however,
those interested
should first email Dr. Barb Thomas (btho...@ualberta.ca and cc Morgan
Randall mrand...@ualberta.ca) the following information: a letter of interest
(1 page), CV describing qualifications and experience, unofficial transcripts
and contact information for three references.

Informal inquiries to gain more information about the position are
also welcome.
Other positions are also available, current opportunities are posted on the
Thomas lab website (
http://people.ales.ualberta.ca/barbthomas/Prospective-Students). The
deadline for applications is January 1st, 2018, but applications will be
accepted until the position is filled.
