The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, NY is accepting 
applications for the following positions:
 

1)  Postdoctoral Research Associate - PostDoc III Document Analysis

Duties: The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies seeks a full time 
postdoctoral research scientist to conduct research urban green 
infrastructure (GI) in a multi-city study of green infrastructure planning 
and policy.  The ideal candidate will have expertise in document analysis, 
green infrastructure planning, advanced statistics and GIS analysis 
skills.  The applicant should be comfortable with social science methods, 
explicitly including methods for document analysis, to work as a member of 
a team of postdocs and senior scientists to examine how green 
infrastructure is perceived, planned, and initiated in multiple US cities.  
The successful applicant must be adept at working with multiple researchers 
from a range of disciplinary backgrounds in urban ecology, including 
geographers, landscape and urban planners, biophysical scientists, and 
environmental educators.  Strong organizational, communication and writing 
skills are also required for coordinating research, database management, 
and input from collaborators in the green infrastructure research program. 
Team members are Joshua Ginsberg, Steward Pickett, Emma Rosi, and Shannon 
LaDeau at the Cary Institute, Timon McPhearson at the Cary Institute and 
the New School University, Mary Cadenasso at the University of California 
Davis, Peter Groffman at the Advanced Science Research Center of the City 
University of New York, and Morgan Grove at the USDA Forest Service. The 
applicant will also collaborate with other closely related research 
projects at the institution including the NSF Urban Resilience to Extreme 
Weather-related Events Sustainability Research Network (URExSRN.net) and 
the Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER.  

Duration:  This position is full time for one year, subject to renewal for 
a second year. The position includes salary plus benefits. Start date is 
flexible but early spring 2018 is preferred.

Location:  Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, NY

Qualifications:  PhD in urban planning, ecology, geography, environmental 
science, or related social sciences. The applicant should be fluent in R or 
other statistical software and have experience in document analysis and 
familiarity with green infrastructure research, in particular in urban 
environments.  Competitive candidates will have multiple publications in 
academic journals.

2)  Postdoctoral Research Associate  -  GI PostDoc II Neighborhood 
Perceptions of Green Infrastructure

Duties: The Cary Institute seeks a full time postdoctoral researcher to 
conduct research on perceptions of green infrastructure by residents of 
contrasting neighborhoods in Baltimore, MD. In particular, the research 
will focus on perceptions about green infrastructure, and whether those 
perceptions relate to social, demographic, and spatial characteristics of 
neighborhoods as well as to the design purpose of the infrastructure. The 
ideal candidate will have expertise with social-ecological approaches to 
urban systems, including the development and conduct of semi-structured 
interviews, as well as community assessments based on Photo Voice.  The 
successful candidate should be comfortable working with multidisciplinary 
teams, familiar with interview design, conduct, and analysis. Strong 
organizational, communication and writing skills are also required for 
coordinating research, database management, and input from collaborators in 
the green infrastructure research program. The project will require 
collaborative work to relate the interview and Photo Voice data with 
standard socio-demographic data as well as with a high resolution and novel 
land cover classification to be employed by the project. Team members are

environments.
